Loving God in the Hard Moments: Trusting and Surrendering
Life is full of moments when things don’t go as planned. Challenges arise, and struggles weigh heavy on our hearts. In these hard seasons, it’s easy to wonder if God is still present, if He still cares. Yet, love for God isn’t just shown in the easy, happy moments. It’s in those times of hardship, when trusting Him feels like a stretch, that we truly show our love.
Trust Through Remembrance
One way to love God in the tough times is by cultivating trust through remembrance. When you’re faced with a difficult moment, take a moment to reflect on how God has been faithful in the past. Recall a time when He helped you through something hard. This practice isn’t about denying the pain of the moment but instead about remembering that God has carried you through challenges before—and He will do it again. A great way to build this habit is by keeping a journal of God’s faithfulness. Write down times when God showed up for you, and when you need strength, revisit those memories. Trust grows when we remember that the God who helped us then is the same God who is with us now.
Scripture Reference:
“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.”
– Psalm 77:11 (NIV)
Surrender Your Burdens in Prayer
Another way to love God in hard moments is by practicing surrender. When life feels overwhelming, there is a tendency to try to handle everything on our own. But God invites us to lay our burdens at His feet. Prayer is a beautiful act of surrender. Instead of holding on to your fears, frustrations, and worries, release them to Him. Speak to God honestly, share your heart, and trust that He sees you, loves you, and has a plan for you—even when the path isn’t clear. Surrendering doesn’t mean giving up; it means choosing to trust God with what we can’t control.
Scripture Reference:
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
– 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)

Therapeutic Strategy: Grounding Techniques
In times of emotional struggle, grounding techniques can help you stay anchored in the present moment, especially when feelings of anxiety or overwhelm arise. One simple grounding technique involves focusing on your senses. Take a few deep breaths, then identify:
• Five things you can see
• Four things you can touch
• Three things you can hear
• Two things you can smell
• One thing you can taste
This practice can bring you back to the present moment, helping you to feel more in control and reminding you that you’re not alone—God is with you. Just as God calls us to cast our anxieties on Him, grounding yourself in the present moment can serve as a physical and emotional reminder of His presence, peace, and care.
Loving God in hard moments isn’t easy, but it is a powerful testimony of faith. When you remember His faithfulness and choose to surrender, you’re not just enduring hardship—you’re walking with God through it, and that makes all the difference.
